Eighteen youths from various communities in the North Rupununi were recently engaged in a UNESCO-sponsored workshop to produce material for the community radio station there.
The activity was held at the Bina Hill Institute at Annai in the North Rupununi and was the second of a three-part series focusing on broadcasting. The first part was held in June.
Radio Paiwomak’s name incorporates the first few letters of three mountain ranges located in the area, namely the Pakaraimas, the Iwokrama and the Makarapan mountain ranges.
Radio Paiwomak broadcasts on 97.1 FM and is accessible to Annai and the surrounding communities.
According to broadcaster Merrano Isaacs, who was one of the facilitators, the activity was “going good so far” and the youths were enjoying the opportunity. Isaacs, in an e-mail interview, declared that the youngsters were “excited about the many possibilities that now lie ahead in being involved in a community media centre.”
The workshop also included sessions in forestry, agriculture, natural resource management and wildlife management.
Isaacs said that the youths were coached in developing a short programme, interview or script focusing on their specialty.
