The Minister of Home Affairs, in continuing his efforts to have foreign nationals residing in Guyana regularise their immigration documents, is to hold discussions with the Brazilian embassy.
A press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) stated that the Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee has indicated that he will be meeting with Brazilians in Guyana to address issues related to their immigration documents. The Minister is expected to hold discussions with the Brazilian embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the issues. This meeting comes after a recent one held with Chinese nationals residing in Guyana.
The release added that the Minister will also be having discussions with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) since they have contact with Brazilians who work in the interior.
Rohee said that of all the foreign nationals in Guyana the Chinese are number one and the Brazilians are number two. For years there has been a debate on the exact number of Brazilians in Guyana. A large number of them are said to be working illegally in gold and diamond mining.
