A man was granted his pre-trial liberty in the sum of $200,000 on charges of two counts of carnal knowledge when he appeared at the New Amsterdam Court on Friday before Magistrate Nigel Hawke.
The court heard that during 2007 and on November 19, 2009, Enauth Seenarine, 78, called ‘Bull Bull’ of Woodley Park, West Coast Berbice reportedly had carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old girl.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Faizal Karim-Baksh opposed bail on the grounds of the nature, gravity and prevalence of “these types of sexual offences.” He submitted that the man was arrested initially and after he was placed on station bail he absconded from the jurisdiction.
The prosecutor said too that if granted bail the defendant would tamper with the witnesses and that he had already offered the victim money not to testify. He also argued that the man may again flee the jurisdiction.
In his application for bail, Attorney-at-law Joel Persid Edmond submitted that his client was an elderly man and was living at the same address for over 70 years and would not flee. He submitted too that the man’s children were “wealthy” and were willing to lodge any amount of money as bail.
After listening to the submissions, Magistrate Hawke considered the man’s age and agreed to grant him bail in the sum of $100,000 for each count. However, before going on bail Seenarine had to first satisfy certain conditions which included lodging his passport and other travel documents. He was also ordered to report weekly to the Fort Wellington Police Station. The magistrate also ordered a probation report into the matter and instructed the man to return to court at Blairmont tomorrow.
