Alliance For Change Leader and MP Raphael Trotman is to move a motion at Thursday’s sitting of the National Assembly for the introduction of the long-awaited Freedom of Information Bill.
The bill which had been put together by the AFC was placed on hold for the party to mobilize sufficient parliamentary support to ensure its passage.
Even though saying that it is in full support of an FOI Act, the government is yet to act on President Bharrat Jagdeo’s commitment that a bill will be presented to Parliament. The last word from the government was that the bill could be introduced next year.
The government has criticized the AFC’s bill and observers say it is unlikely to support it and will later introduce its own version.
Trotman’s motion simply asks for leave to be granted for the introduction of the Freedom of Information Bill 2006.
The government has been severely criticized over the absence of an FOI Act.
