A 35-year-old father of three died yesterday morning moments after he was pitched some 50 yards from his motorcycle when a car crashed into him on the Diamond, East Bank Demerara public road

Rodwell Mercurius, of Friendship Squatting Area, E.B.D., was pronounced dead at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre yesterday around 12:30am. The driver of the car was tested by police with the use of a breathalyzer and he was found to be over the legal limit of alcohol consumption.
When Stabroek News visited the home of the deceased, his wife, Carol Mercurius said she received the news sometime after midnight but could not bear to go to the scene and see her husband in that condition. Instead, the man’s sister and his nephew, Fenton James, went to inquire further.
According to James, his uncle, who is a brush cutter by profession, was riding his motorcycle, CD 4968, on his way home when he was hit by the car, PFF 1671. Reports are that at the point of impact at the Diamond junction traffic light, Mercurius was flung some distance.
This newspaper was told that the man’s motionless body was transported to the hospital by the police but he reportedly died before arriving there. He was pronounced dead by doctors on arrival.
The driver has been detained at the Diamond Police Station while the motorcycle and car are being kept at the Grove Police Station.
The man is survived by his wife and three daughters.
