The Georgetown City Council said yesterday that Councillor Junior Garrett was elected chairman of its finance committee at Monday’s statutory meeting.
Garrett had served in the capacity of vice-chairman of the committee for eight years, a press release from the Mayor and City Council said yesterday.
The position of chairman became vacant after the demise of Deputy Mayor Robert Williams who held the position for 13 years.
The finance committee is a statutory committee of the council and it monitors and evaluates the performance of the City Treasurer’s Department.
In addition, at the same meeting former Mayor of Georgetown Ranwell Jordan was unanimously elected by a full council as the chairman of the Markets and Public Health Committee. The main purpose of the committees is to make recommendations to the full council on critical issues that will affect the city of Georgetown.
The committee also acts as a mediator between the full council and citizens, the release added.
