Hikers Hockey Club honoured its founders as well as veteran hockey administrator Chris Fernandes at its inaugural Awards Dinner and Presentation ceremony Monday evening at Guyana Pegasus.
The two founding members of the Club, hockey administrator Troy Peters and the late former national captain Andy Gouveia were recognized for their contribution to the Club during the ceremony attended by players, hockey officials and sponsors.
Peters and Gouveia founded the team over 15 years ago and their contributions must be recognized, President of Hikers Club, Devin Munroe told the audience.
Fernandes, a former President of the Guyana Hockey Board was also honoured for his significant contribution to the sport over the years.
Peters is brief remarks expressed gratitude to the Club noting that Hikers team has made significant strides over the years and its junior development programme should be emulated by other clubs and sporting bodies locally.
“While we reminisce on the past we must also recognized those players who have, stayed on to ensure the legacy continues, I am heartened by the steps taken to honour not only club members but other key stakeholders,” Peters a former President of the Guyana Hockey Board said.
Also receiving plagues were main sponsors Demerara Distillers Ltd. Western Union, Global Technology, Woodpecker Products and Scotia Bank.
St. Stanislaus College and Everest Hikers Club were also recognized for making their facilities available to the Club.
Vice President of the Club Rene Edwards said that several members of the Club have excelled academically and they include Marvin Dannett, Janela Munroe and Chantelle who received hockey scholarships to study at Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom.
Special mention went out to Leroy Jack, Michael Harding, Travon Younge, Renee James, Devon Scott, Rayon Branford and Shaquille Assannah for their success at CSEC Examinations
Also recognized were members Jerozeno Bell, Timothy McIntosh, Triston Gomes, Marc King and Robert Fernandes, all former national players.
Sports Journalist Rawle Welsh was also identified for his coverage of hockey.
