2012 Lester B Pearson College Scholarship awardee Glinton Hanover has been granted a four-year, Cdn$120,000 ($22.9 million) degree scholarship to Trent University, Canada.
The former Queen’s College student recently completed a two-year, Cdn$80,000 scholarship, at Pearson College, where he undertook the international Baccalaureate diploma. He was one of 200 foreign students from 83 countries who were granted scholarships to the college.
Hanover, 19, of Sparendaam, told Stabroek News that it was his “excellent academic performance” that paved the way
for the Trent University Scholarship. “Along with demonstrated leadership skills, community service and excellent record of extra-curriculum activities,” Hanover added. He explained that he had to be nominated by Pearson College and “applied in faith and was awarded the scholarship.” The 19-year-old will be pursuing a degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.
“My time at Pearson College has been most fulfilling, fun and eye opening,” Hanover told this newspaper. He said he was able to learn about other cultures and share his, while representing Guyana. “I believe that the extremely rigorous Inter-national Baccalaureate diploma programme and the demanding way of life of Pearson College have prepared me very well to take on the challenges at Trent University,” said Hanover, when asked about his expectations of Trent University. He said the “lessons of hard work, determination and perseverance,” learnt at Pearson, will help with the challenges that may arise at the university. “And with help from God who has been graceful and faithful,” he added, “I am honestly excited to take on the challenges.”
Pearson College UWC is a two-year pre-university school (Grade 12 and Gap Year) for up to 200 students from over 100 countries who live, study and grow together at the edge of the western world.
