Timothy Sampson, one of the men suspected of robbing a Corentyne family after sawing a hole into their house, appeared before a city court yesterday charged with armed robbery and shooting at police officers.
It is alleged that on August 5th, Sampson, 29, of Number 48 Village, Corentyne, while in the company of others and armed with a gun, robbed Indranie Takean of $100,000 cash. On that same day, Sampson, along with his group of accomplices, are accused of firing at police officers with the intent to maim and disfigure them.
Sampson was not required to plead to the charges.
Sampson’s lawyer, in his request for bail, stated that nothing had been found in his client’s possession. He further told the court that his client had been placed on $40,000 station bail after he was arrested on August 23rd and the defendant returned to work three days later. The attorney reasoned that during the time his client had been on bail, he had broken no laws, and was therefore requesting that bail be granted on this basis.
However, Prosecutor Deniro Jones’ objections to bail were upheld by Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Magistrate McLennan adjourned the case to September 11th and the matter was transferred to the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court.
Takean and her rice farmer husband Tagraj Tulshi were robbed by a group of men armed with cutlasses and firearms who entered the couple’s house through the hole they cut in the wall.
