Students of the University of Guyana (UG) are expected to soon have access to more reliable wireless internet service at their campuses.
This is according to Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Philanthropy, Alumni and Civic Engagement Dr. Paloma Mohamed, who told reporters on Wednesday at the Herdmanston Lodge that UG is currently working in conjunction with the E-Governance Unit of the Ministry of Public Telecommunications to improve the quality of Wi-Fi available to students.
“Optimistically we are looking at a better, more stable, much more widespread, decentralised system of internet connectivity for all three campuses within the next month to six weeks,” Mohamed said.
The project, which is being organised by Director of the Office of Strategic Initiatives Dr. Fitzgerald Yaw, will see the unit attempting to link the fibre optic ring previously established on campus with the E-Governance towers and the university’s Centre for Information Technology.
Mohamed noted that once activated, the service is likely to link the campuses of Tain, Johns and Turkeyen as well as later on extend to the nine Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) campuses.
Though a cost has not been established, a “wide ballpark” figure of $6M has been suggested by the E-Government Unit. The final cost will be dependent on the suitability of the existing infrastructure on the campuses.
