Anisa Mohammed produced another sterling all-round performance which allowed Trinidad and Tobago to hoist the 2016 West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional T20 title after beating Jamaica by two wickets in Monday night’s final played at the Providence National Stadium.
The Jamaicans, who ended the tournament on a high as runners-up, were restricted to 100 for 7 from 20 overs batting first with wicket-keeper Tameka Sanford (35) and Chinelle Henry (25) the main scorers. Off spinner Mohamed tapped into her West Indies experience as she bagged 2-15 before returning to smack one four and a six in her 21 to help her side reach 101 for 8.
Opener Reneice Boyce (18) and top-scorer and skipper Melissa Aguillera (26) chipped in with useful scores for Trinidad who survived some scares after Vanessa Watts (2-17) and Shanel Daley (2-13) threatened to pull things back for the Jamaicans.
Jamaica never got going as they lost six of their batter for just 40 runs before Henry and Sanford joined forces to pile on 55 runs for the seventh wicket. Chasing an average total, the champs also endured a tough patch as their opponents managed to make inroads.
However, it was the skipper and Mohammed who steadied the innings ensuring that majority of the runs were achieved before some lower-order hitting from Selene O’Neil (11*) and Shenelle Lord (08*) who managed to find the boundary a few times, helped seal an important win for the twin-island republic ladies.
