Rehabilitation work is scheduled to commence on the airstrip at Mahdia in Region Eight during this week at a cost of $23.6 million and is slated to last for three to four weeks.
Work will entail raising the surface of the airstrip by adding four inches of laterite and also placing two layers of bitumen at the top of the laterite, a Government Information Agency release said. And in order to provide safety for aircraft operations a 100 foot by 100 foot apron will be constructed since there is no apron and it is hazardous to have parked planes close to the airstrip, the release said.
The 2009 budget has made provision for the rehabilitation of the Mahdia airstrip, construction of new airstrips at Wakenaam and Leguan and maintenance of domestic aerodromes, the release added.
