Yesterday, the Minister said that following discussions with Curtis Adams, the President of the Parika/ Supenaam Speedboat Own-ers Association, it was decided that the fare will be reduced by $100 with immediate effect. Consequently commuters will now pay $1100 as opposed to the old fare of $1200.  Prashad announced that he is continuing negotiations to have the fares reduced even further, since this new fare is still higher than the $1000 which it was before it was increased earlier this year. The price for fuel locally has decreased steadily over the last two months.

The Minister announced that contact has been made with the Speedboat Associa-tion in Bartica, and they too have agreed to reduce their fares. Speedboats normally traverse between Parika and Bartica. In the meantime, the other prominent speedboat route is between Georgetown and Vreed-en- Hoop, and fares are expected to drop there as well.

Meanwhile Prashad is expected to have a meeting with representatives from the speedboat associations during this week to discuss the further reduction of fares.
