A 33-year-old man died one day after he was hit on the head with a piece of wood which had nails on it.
On Old Year’s night, Rajesh Seetaram of Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara and some friends were cooking at the head of the road in the community. While there, Seetaram became intoxicated and in the wee hours of New Year’s Day he and a neighbour had a heated argument.
The intoxicated man then fell on the road and the neighbour went home and returned with a `round wood’ which had several nails. He reportedly dealt Seetaram a lash on the head. The badly injured man was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Hospital and was later admitted to the open ward.
He died around 10:30 on Monday night just as his family was preparing to take him to the St Joseph Mercy Hospital for a CAT scan.
Stabroek News has since heard that the police are searching for the suspect who fled the scene shortly after hitting Seetaram.
The dead man’s brother Richard told this newspaper yesterday that when Seetaram arrived at the Georgetown Hospital there weren’t many attendants around to assist. The man expressed concern about where his brother was placed and stated that this case should have been treated as a critical one and with some amount of urgency.
He added that he believes that it was the nails that caused the damage and he wonders why Seetaram’s bloodied head was not bandaged. He said Seetaram should not have been admitted to the open ward considering that blood was flowing from his nostrils and mouth. Hospital officials could not be contacted for comment yesterday.
He said that the CAT scan could not be done earlier since there was no one around to do it because of the holiday.
Richard stated that Seetaram and his neighbour are good friends. He said that on the night of the incident a report was made to the Sparendaam Police Station.
Seetaram who will be buried tomorrow leaves to mourn his relatives and friends.
