A man who allegedly murdered a Friendship man on Christmas Eve night was yesterday refused bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Sherwin Barnwell called ‘Reeya’, 23, of Friendship, East Bank Demerara was not required to plead to the murder charge.
It is alleged that between December 24 and 25 at Friendship, EBD he murdered Nohar Bahadur also known as ‘Bunty’.
It was reported that Bahadur, 42, was robbed and beaten to death a few yards away from his home. Police patrolling the area found Bahadur of 24 Friendship lying dead on the Friendship public road. His face had been damaged beyond recognition and his body bore marks of violence.
Reports are that Bahadur had just left a barbecue where he had had an argument with a man and was heading home when two men on a bicycle confronted him. They robbed him of cash among other things and then inflicted a severe beating on him before fleeing.
One of the two men who beat Bahadur is suspected to be the same person he quarrelled with at the barbecue. The dead man’s sister told Stabroek News that she was awakened by a sound just after 10 pm and went onto her veranda to investigate and saw two men on the road beating another man. She had no idea it was her brother but called the police and alerted them. She went back to bed and on Christmas Day the family realised that Bahadur had not gone home that night.
According to the sister, several other persons passed the body lying on the road but no one could recognise who it was. Then someone called the family to say the body the police had picked up from the road was Bahadur since he had been carrying his identification card. The sister said she rushed down to the hospital and identified her brother from his feet and the clothes he was wearing.
Barnwell’s case was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for February 5.
