The police force has improved in a short period of time. I am deeply impressed with their game plan which is paying off. I thought that they had given up on Bovell, but it just goes to show how long and effective are the arms of the law. I hope those who have seen it best to turn to criminal lives are taking note.
The tactics of having armed police at various points in Georgetown is another wise idea. It has brought safety to a wide cross section of Guyanese and tourists, when they are in Georgetown.
The Honourable Minister of Home Affairs and the Acting Police Commissioner are equally responsible for the turn around and decline of the crime situation. As long as the police continue to score heavily against the criminals they would be forced to retreat.
My belief is that no other entity at this time is capable of fighting crime as effectively as the police force. Community Policing Groups are a waste of time, because they do not have the resources and expertise and the majority of the members lack proper training.
I always had the impression that Mr. Henry Greene was the most suitable candidate for the top post. He has shown that he is a no nonsense police commissioner and has honoured the oath he has taken. He has a way of demanding respect from the members of the force. This in itself can help to improve the force. When the leader is effective, sensible and hardworking, it would spread like an epidemic in the force.
Finally I would love to see all the retirees that were called back to work vacating their positions and making way for the younger ambitious officers to gain promotion.
