First Lady Varshnie Jagdeo took Christmas cheer to children during the holidays.
A press release said the First Lady hosted the annual children’s party at State House in New Amsterdam where she, along with the housekeeper and her six children, and Kids First Fund volunteers Alana and Arisha, organised a party for about 100 children. The release said the children were treated to lunch, snacks and drinks and were each given goody bags containing sweets, school supplies and toys. Mrs Jagdeo also added to the festive atmosphere by drawing designs on the faces and tattoos on each child.
The release said Mrs Jagdeo also hosted a party in Supenaam, Essequibo. Showkatt Alli and the area’s PPP/C candidate took Mrs Jagdeo to Aurora where the Allis’ had put up festive decorations in their yard for the party. The party started earlier than had been planned as eager children turned up at the venue to see the First Lady. About 130 children attended the festivities. They too were treated to a meal and snacks and a goody bag. The children also enjoyed the face painting and tattoos exercise done by Mrs Jagdeo.
Upon her return to Georgetown, the First Lady and two volunteers distributed dinner to the less fortunate ones living on the streets of the city. The First Lady is grateful to Meena and her family and the Allis’ “for cooking and for the groundwork”; Mr Matthews and Mr Jodhan of Banks DIH Limited for the drinks and the chairs; Beharry’s, Mr Nasrudeen of Guyana Stationery and Office Supplies’; Food for the Poor and Hero International for the items for the goody bags; the National Communications Network team at Berbice and Mr Alphonso, Mr Sewlall and team at RCA Essequibo for their assistance in making the parties a success. Also, gratitude is extended to Nadia, Natasha, Orphio, Kay, Brian and Mark for preparing the meal for those living on the streets of Georgetown and to Mark and Nadia for helping to distribute them.
