The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security plans to provide counselling to the 13-year-old mother whose five-day-old baby was taken by a woman who allegedly sent her to buy clothes for the child.
The Chief Probation Officer of the Ministry, Patricia Grey, told Stabroek News on Thursday that the teen would need a lot of counselling as well as skills training so that she can get back on her feet.
Grey said that she was made to understand that the girl is living with relatives and contrary to what many would want to believe the baby would not be taken from her.
She said that the main aim of the Ministry in this situation is to help the teenager, not take away her child.
She added that if the person who impregnated the teenager is found he would be charged with statutory rape.
On January 2 Marcel La Cruz, 25 of Lot 12 Supply, East Bank Demerara appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court charged with stealing the said baby. She was refused bail after she was not required to plead to the charge. Her next court date is January 29.
