Honorary Consul of Guyana to California Joseph D’Oliveira retired at the end of last year after serving for 30 years in this position, from 1976 to 1993 and from 1994 to 2006.
D’Oliveira, a 1985 Arrow of Achievement awardee, earned kudos from members of the community within which he served for his meritorious service both as a diplomat and as a community worker. He was described by President of the California-based Guyana Medical Relief (GMR) Inc Dr Michael Scott, as “the unseen and unsung hero [of the organisation], who has contributed quietly and steadfastly to our success.”
GMR marked its 24th anniversary last year and its Chief Operating Officer Eula Menzies also retired. Menzies is one of the founders of the organisation, which provides medical and social relief to hospitals and agencies in Guyana. From 1984, when it shipped its first batch of medical supplies to date, GMR has provided close to US$25 million in supplies to the St Joseph Mercy, Georgetown Public, New Amsterdam, Port Mourant, Linden, Bartica, Suddie, Mahaicony and Davis Memorial hospitals.
Among those sending congratulatory messages to D’Oliveira and Menzies were: Guyana’s Ambassador to Venezuela Odeen Ishmael; Foreign Minister Rudy Insanally; Chief Protocol Officer, California State Assembly Mervyn Dymally and US Senator Dianne Feinstein.
