Magistrate Krishendat Persaud on Friday sentenced a man who pleaded guilty to break and enter and larceny to five years imprisonment, while two of his alleged accomplices have been granted bail.
According to the Springlands Magistrate’s Court report Albert Rajaram, 28, a labourer of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, on November 30, stole $3M worth of silver jewellery from the People’s Choice Business Centre at Number 78 Village. The store is owned by Fareez Arakhan.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that police acting on information, arrested Rajaram in Georgetown and a quantity of jewellery was recovered. Rajaram then provided information that led to Neisha Angad, 22, a waitress of Number 79 Village and Ulanda Angel, 25, of Number 53 Village being arrested and charged with the crime. Arrest warrants have also been issued for Fredrick Sealey and Wayne Bender.
Grant told the court that Arakhan had got up at 3 am to travel to Georgetown when he responded to a noise in his yard and saw two persons with bags scaling his fence. He said the businessman later checked his store and observed that a southern door to the washroom had been wrenched open and that all of the glass cases were empty.
In addition to the five-year sentence, Magistrate Persaud also imposed a one-year sentence on Rajaram for breaching a suspended sentence he had earlier imposed on him in another matter.
Angad and Angel pleaded not guilty to the charges and were placed on $100,000 bail and $200,000 surety in like sum, respectively. The case will be called again on January 18.
