A man who is accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend over a period of two years, as well as stealing and damaging property belonging to her, was yesterday refused bail by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Timothy John, 34, of 182 Calendar Street, Albouystown pleaded not guilty to eight charges which included two counts of inflicting grievous bodily harm, two for malicious damage to property, robbery under arms, simple larceny and two assault charges. He was charged together with Samantha Augustus, age 27, of 132 Nelson Street, Mocha, East Bank Demerara on the first charge.
It is alleged that on January 6 at Georgetown, John and Augustus unlawfully inflicted grievous bodily harm on Allison Hunte. On July 27 last year John is accused of damaging one window visor, one fog lamp, one foot rack, a bumper and other items valued at $291,000, property of Hunte and he also inflicted bodily harm on her. On August 27, 2005 he allegedly robbed her at gunpoint of $300,000 cash. On July 28 last year he is accused of damaging 2 head lamps, 2 fog lamps, 1 bonnet and 1 front grill, a total value of $49,000. Between December 6 and 21, he allegedly stole one Samsung cellular phone, one gold band and gold earrings valued at $100,000 belonging to Hunte. On January 6 this year he allegedly assaulted Kester Croal and Mark McKenzie so as to cause them actual bodily harm.
Additionally Hunte, age 30, of South Ruimveldt was charged for allegedly assaulting Augustus on January 6 this year. Hunte claimed that Augustus had sprayed her with pepper spray in her face.
Representing John and Augustus was attorney-at-law Nigel Anthony who told the court that the allegations came about as a result of a relationship that had gone sour between his client John and Hunte. He stated that Hunte gave his client an ultimatum to leave Augustus and she followed them to Linden where they were spending their vacation and she started a fracas. He added that his clients had no brushes with the law before and John who has a stable place of abode is a businessman while Augustus is pregnant with his child. The lawyer told the court that John’s family could testify about how Hunte has constantly pestered John and even his family because he had left her for Augustus.
Police prosecutor Maxine Graham stated that she had no objection to bail for Augustus but objected to bail for John saying that the police had a difficult time in getting him to court.
Hunte told the court that she and John only broke up two months ago and she stated that his present girlfriend had bitten her on her fingers.
The magistrate refused bail for John and granted $25,000 bail to Augustus.
All of them have to return to court on January 25.
