Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony yesterday handed over 30 blazers to the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) for use by the national football team known as the Golden Jaguars in the Digicel Caribbean Cup finals.
The donation, which was made at the Minister’s office on Main Street, follows a request from the GFF.
Minister Anthony, in response to the request had promised the team blazers if they were to qualify for the finals of the Digicel Caribbean Cup football tournament which kicks off in the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago today.
Minister Anthony said yesterday he was happy with the progress of the team. He noted that the team’s performance was a big boost for football and other local sport.
“I think this is our most successful run and we are pleased to be associated with their success,” he added.
General Secretary of the GFF, George Rutherford, thanked the Minister for keeping his promise and stated that he was impressed by the efficiency of the Ministry.
Rutherford said the team needed tax waivers before travelling to Trinidad and the Ministry had facilitated that procedure in one day allowing the team to travel unhindered. He also thanked Herman’s Tailoring for getting the Blazers done on time.
The thirty blazers cost approximately $G500, 000 and will be taken to Trinidad today by team manager Aubrey Hutson.
