The Archer’s Home yesterday received just over $1.5 million from Esso to help with the building of a new sanitary block and rehabilitating the main building.
The funds are the proceeds of the service station’s `Help Us Help’ campaign which began on November 15 and ended on December 28 last.
Esso’s Retail Manager Shahara Burchsmith said at a simple handing-over ceremony at the home for the elderly yesterday that the Rotary Club has been working to raise funds to repair the house including the kitchen and to build a new sanitary block.
She said that the service company decided to donate every $1.50 of the margin of profit for every gallon of gasoline sold to the home.
Burchsmith noted that the home’s sanitary facilities and the kitchen were in a deplorable state.
She said the company’s commitment was $1.5 million, but the sum of $1,530,730 was raised during the specified period.
Burchsmith said the company would be thinking about making future donations to the Archer’s Home.
Meanwhile, member of the Rotary Club of Demerara Tara Singh in a short speech said that three years ago a project was launched to carry out works at the home. He said since then a water tank along with a pump had been installed.
He added that in one month’s time a contractor will be hired to build a sanitary block at the home with some of the money donated by Esso.
