Secondary school students of forms one to three who are members of the Litchfield Library on the West Coast of Berbice recently participated in a ‘spelling bee’ competition sponsored by the library.
Seven students took part in the first round of the competition and four were short-listed to take part in the second round. Lois Blackman emerged winner while Grea Grant and Grayan Grant were second and third respectively.
They were presented with special book prizes while the other participants were also honoured.
The contest was conducted by Wilfred Success, teacher of the West Ruimveldt Primary School, who complimented the organizers at the end of the session. “I hope this is the first of this kind of activity and I hope to see more participants,” Success said.
He noted that the words the students were asked to spell were challenging but he advised them to “read more and to pay more attention to words when reading.”
He told the students that words are important in writing and that they should make a collection to master the language.
Chief librarian Lorraine Blackman told Stabroek News that the students were involved in learning to spell new words at the library during the August holidays and it was decided that the competition be held so that they could become “sharper.”
Other members of the library were also invited to share in games and fun. Blackman hopes that parents can be more supportive to the library so their children can benefit.
Blackman disclosed that the library, which is a branch of the National Library, was built by self-help through the assistance of the Social Impact Amelioration Pro-gramme, the regional administration, the Neigh-bourhood Democratic Council and the community.
