The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) is to establish a Wide Area Network (WAN) which is expected to boost government’s move to reform its taxation system.
Cabinet has offered its no objection to the award of a $26.7M contract for the procurement of equipment to establish the WAN which is an integral part of government’s move to reform the taxation system, the Government Informa-tion Agency (GINA) reported.
Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon said that since the advent of the new taxation system, the Value Added Tax, the responses of various stakeholders have been mixed.
Dr. Luncheon said, “In many instances, stakeholders have been responding commendably and have been responsible in acting in accordance with the law when responding to VAT. Registered businesses have by now been displaying their evidence of registration and are complying with the laws on the pricing mechanism.”
According to GINA, he noted, however, that some businesses have deliberately or otherwise sought to exploit circumstances created by VAT’s implementation.
Stakeholders will be advised about appropriate and inappropriate practices, Dr. Luncheon said, adding that Cabinet members will be joining forces with the GRA in reaching out to communities across Guyana on issues related to VAT’s implementation.
