Dear Editor,
I was fortunate to see an interview on Channel 9 with Mr. de Caires on the programme “That Is Who I am”. It was for me a motivational moment hearing him speak about starting the newspaper and the daily ongoing challenges that they were faced with, and recognising where it is now, and to acknowledge his wife’s – Mrs. Doreen de Caires – involvement in the success of this newspaper. His reference to Ken Gordon and his initial influence was powerful. Sometimes others see in us what we don’t see in ourselves and they can prepare the simple blueprint for your life’s journey and purpose. Stabroek News in my home is the first paper the entire family gravitate to when the daily newspapers reach our home. One has to be fast when the newspapers are retrieved from the mail box as every member of my family try to find a way to get to the Stabroek News first.
Some people get into business not just for the simple purpose of making money. This group may be few in numbers. The idealism of doing right for mankind is sometimes a powerful motivating factor. As we develop intellectually we question our purpose on earth and we recognise our purpose is not just for self gratification but to be of service to mankind. There is a new group of business men and women that are emerging and they are what we call social entrepreneurs. Materialism does not make you someone because this can be stripped any day. We need to develop ourselves intellectually and to embrace qualities that can make us better human beings as our journey on earth is temporary and we take nothing when we leave.
To Mr. de Caires and the staff of Stabroek News continue being a source of knowledge for the Guyanese people.
Yours faithfully,
Karen Bacchus
