Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee has established a board of enquiry to conduct an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the jail break at the Mazaruni Prison on Friday January 12.
According to a release from the Government Information Agency (GINA), the minister’s move is pursuant to the Prisons Service Act.
GINA said Rohee has appointed six persons to serve on the board of enquiry including former acting police commissioner Floyd McDonald, crime prevention specialist Errol Van Nooten and Prison Services Assistant Superintendent Rev Fay Clarke.
GINA did not name the other three members of the board. However it noted that the board will enquire into several issues including the circumstances surrounding the escape prior to, during and after the escape, all matters relating to and incidental to the escape and the existing security arrangements in respect of the custody, management and control of prisoners .
The enquiry will be done with special reference to those that may be classified as dangerous prisoners at the Mazaruni Prison.
The minister told GINA that the board of enquiry will start its work on January 24 and complete its task by February 5 and on conclusion, will submit a report of its findings to the ministry.
Around 16:15 hrs on January 12, nine prisoners escaped during a routine feeding exercise. To date six of them have been recaptured .
