Dear Editor,
In your response to the letter titled “The constituency system creates more independent MPs” (07.01.24), you leave out some very important information.
Yes, in England’s parliament the party members are strongly urged to vote with the party. However, by the time the measure comes up for a vote, it more often than not has been made palatable to the member and his or her constituents through modifications.
Do you think that an MP would vote against his or her constituents’ interests if the seat was given to the MP by those constituents?
Guyanese MPs vote with the party because it is the party that allocates the seat. The original letter writer is absolutely correct.
Party paramountcy should be abolished now.
Yours faithfully,
Paul Ian Alleyne
