The Annual Mayor’s Cup Football tournament which was scheduled to kick-off today at the GFC ground has been rescheduled for a February 2 start.
According to co-ordinator Lennox Arthur, 16 teams will now contest the tournament and not 24 as was reported earlier.
Arthur explained that he only received the written permission and rules governing the competition from the Guyana Football Federation this week and as such adjustments had to be made to the fixtures.
According to Arthur, the 16 teams that will contest the competition are: Camptown, Pouderoyen, Fruta Conquerors, Uitvlugt, Topp XX, GDF, Pele, Den Amstel, Santos, Mocha Champs, Western Tigers, Buxton United, Victoria Kings, Police, Alpha United and BV/Triumph.
The feature match on February 2 brings together Fruta Conquerors and Uitvlugt, while the opening game will see Camptown tackling Pouderoyen. On February 3, Top XX and GDF collide in the opening game while Pele will face Den Amstel in the feature match.
All matches will be played under floodlights at the GFC ground.
Arthur said the tournament should have been played last November but because Guyana was at the time hosting Group `H’ matches of the Digicel Caribbean Cup tournament he was forced to reschedule the start.
Over $1M in prize money will be up for grabs.
The winning team will receive $500,000 while the second to fourth place finishers will collect $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
According to Arthur, Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green is assisting in securing sponsorship for the 20th annual tournament.
