Gardener begs court for mercy after admitting to theft

Magistrate Kim Kyte-John on Thursday sentenced a man to six months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to larceny when he appeared before her at the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court.

Deochan Parris Phillips, a gardener, admitted to stealing US$300 or $60,000 from his employer Perry Gossai, on Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at Woodley Park, West Coast Berbice.

Police Prosecutor Rawle Ferreira told the court that the defendant was doing some gardening in Gossai’s yard and he invited him into his house. Phillips, he said, removed the money from the drawer of a writing desk. Gossai discovered that the money was missing after Phillips left. A report was made to the police and the defendant was arrested.

When the magistrate asked Phillips if he had anything to say in his defence he asked for the court’s mercy. He said he is already serving a sentence for other offences and would like to incorporate this penalty with the other prison term.

The magistrate agreed and ordered that the sentence was to run concurrently with the others.
