A Werk-en-Rust man appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday charged with stealing 34 pounds of chicken from the Brickdam Police Station where he is employed as a handyman.
Meanwhile Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan, before whom the case was heard, issued an arrest warrant for another man who allegedly assisted in the theft.
Andrew Luthers, 38, of Hadfield Street, Werk-en-Rust denied the charge of simple larceny and was remanded to prison. An arrest warrant was issued for Mark Johnson.
It alleged that on January 19 the two stole the chicken valued at $7,680 from the Guyana Police Force.
Reports are that Luthers is employed at the Brickdam Police Station Mess Hall. On the day in question he was reportedly seen handing the chicken through the fence at the back of the Hall to Johnson. They were both arrested.
After denying the allegation, Luthers told the court that he was being penalized for something that he knew nothing about.
“They arrested Mark and he tell them how is me thief de chicken. I had nothing to do with it. When they had de right man, dem loose he.”
Luthers told the court that he washes cars next to the police station and the chicken was found in the bucket that he uses to fetch water.
The matter will continue in Court Two on February 5.
