The 2006/07 Mayor’s Cup Football tournament will kick off on Friday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground where defending champions Conquerors will tackle Uitvlugt in the feature match of a double-header card.
But before that Pouderoyen will attempt to set the stage for their West Coast counterparts, Uitvlugt when they oppose Camptown in the first match from 6pm. The feature encounter is set to begin at 8pm.
Tournament co-ordinator Lennox Arthur, told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the tournament is expected to be filled with excitement and rivalry.
Arthur said that both Conquerors and Uitvlugt, for example, have been re-organising administratively and will be very strong as a result. He explained that the re-organisation of both teams was a means of strengthening the sides.
“I expect the competition to be very competitive. Teams from Georgetown are always afraid of the teams from the West Coast,” Arthur said, adding that Conquerors is now under new leadership owing to elections held yesterday.
According to Arthur certain key players in the Uivlugt line-up, which will be led by Loris Abrams, are back in the side so the team is not as weak as it was before. He said that Conquerers is expected to begin their second title hunt in fine style.
Meanwhile, Pele will face Den Amstel in the feature game on Saturday at the GFC ground which will also see Topp XX Football Club and the Guyana Defense Force (GDF) locking horms from 6pm in the first match.
Western Tigers is set to play Uprising Football Club in the feature match next Wednesday at the GFC ground with Santos taking on Mocha Champions in the first match at 6 pm.
Next Friday will see Georgetown League champions, Alpha United, battling BV Triumph in the feature match while Victoria Kings take on Police in the first match at the GFC ground, Bourda.
The winner of the 2006/07 tournament will walk away with $500,000 while second, third and fourth place team will receive $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
The most goal scorer rides off with a Jailing motorcycle compliments of Jailing Motorcycle Company while the most outstanding goalkeeper will get a small gas stove from Keishars.
