A 32-year-old man of Linden/Soesdyke Highway yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court accused of raping a 14-year-old girl.
Sean Henry of Lot 625 Kuru Kururu, Linden/Soesdyke Highway was not required to plead to the charge of carnally knowing a girl under the age of 15 and Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan remanded him to prison.
He allegedly committed the act last Thursday.
Attorney-at-law Camilla Edwards who entered an appearance for Henry told the court that he is the owner of a shop and because of his incarceration it had to be closed. She asked the court to consider granting her client bail.
But Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews asked for bail to be refused owing to the serious and prevalent nature of this type of offence. He said the accused and the complainant are known to each other and if Henry is granted bail there is the possibility he might tamper with witnesses.
The magistrate refused bail after saying that the court had to take note of these offences and their prevalence in the community.
The case continues at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on February 5.
