An elderly woman died and a pedal cyclist remains hospitalised two days after they were involved in an accident with a motorcar driven by a Berbice talk show host.
Kathleen Stewart, 66, of Rosignol, West Bank Berbice suffered a broken hip and knee and injuries to her right leg. She died of internal injuries on Wednesday evening at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
Reports are that Stewart was sitting on a chair in front of her home at around 4.30 pm on Monday when a speeding car struck her. Cyclist Permaul Sannasi, 38, told Stabroek News that he was riding along the road when he saw the car, which was coming from the direction of Georgetown, spinning a few times. Sannasi said he dropped his bicycle and ran towards Stewart’s fence when he was struck. “Me try to jump the fence but the car come full speed and me couldn’t mek it,” he said. Sannasi sustained injuries to both legs.
He and Stewart were both rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital and Stewart was later transferred to the GPH.
