A 30-year-old man who allegedly demanded with menace $1.2M from another after he had given the man some gold to sell appeared on Thursday in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Permanand Paul of 114 Garnett Street, Kitty who was not required to plead to the charge of demanding money with menace was released on $125,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan.
It is alleged that on January 18, with menace, Paul demanded from Andrew Gravesande $1.2M.
Attorney-at-law Mark Waldron in a bail application told the court that his client was approached by the complainant who told him that he had a market in Barbados for gold. According to the defence counsel his client gave Gravesande some gold to sell for him.
Waldron told the court that Gravesande later told his client that the gold was seized at the airport but based on investigations he discovered that Gravesande had indeed sold the gold in Barbados.
He stated that his client did demand the money because it is his.
Waldron then informed the court that Gravesande is in the lockups because the police did not believe his story.
On these grounds, Waldron asked the court to grant his client bail. The case will continue on March 23.
