Two accidents on the East Bank of Demerara last evening resulted in seven persons sustaining injuries and being taken to the Georgetown Hospital emergency unit.
One of the accidents occurred at Covent Garden, EBD around 6 pm and involved two cars while the other happened at Little Diamond close to 7:30 pm and involved three vehicles: a car, minibus and canter truck.
Reports from the first accident are that some friends were returning home when the car they were in collided with another vehicle resulting in injuries to four of its occupants: Amanda Sugrim, of 69 Houston EBD, Odessa Gordon and Joseph Christian of 38 Friendship EBD, and the driver who sustained minor cuts.
The second accident was caused by a car which hit a Kitty/Campbellville bus BGG 1026. The bus according to the driver of the Melsha’s Furniture canter truck, GGG 7909, was swerving to get back into its lane when it turned turtle hitting the truck before coming to a stop at Burial Ground Road, Little Diamond.
Beesham ‘Navin’ Lokamar told this newspaper that he was heading north when the bus travelling in a southerly direction came into his path. “The bus dash out from a vehicle and start to flick and hit the canter”, he said.
The bus was at the time carrying five passengers. Sonia Raywat said they were heading to Friendship following a get together. Other persons in the bus with her at the time were Sonia’s baby daughter Vashti Raywat, her mother Rajee Seechan, all of Yarrow Dam, West Ruimveldt and the driver Alvin Williams and his wife from Friendship.
Lokamar said he was in the truck’s cab along with two females while five others were in the enclosed tray of the vehicle. The man noted that upon impact with the minibus his legs were pinned. Persons in the area rescued him. The car, which hit the minibus and was on the scene of the accident was not seriously damaged nor were its occupants.
Last evening, as a result of the accident at Little Diamond, there were long lines of vehicles in both directions as the police worked to keep the situation under control. Scores of persons from the area came out to see what the commotion was about. One observer said she was at home on Burial Ground Road, Little Diamond when she heard a loud noise as the two vehicles collided. (Christopher Yaw)
