Dear Editor,
I was quite appalled to learn that the Jailing Company has been given 400,000 acres of forest to harvest lumber for twenty years. Which country in the world, except Guyana, would allow a foreign company to control such a huge tract of its land? Given the shenanigans this company and others are already involved in what exactly are we getting out of this deal? Is this company going to set up nurseries and replant trees that it is taking out? Is this in the “deal”?
Despite its runaway economic development, China has already used up most of its natural resources.
It is predicted that because of farmers leaving the land for jobs in the cities, building factories on good farmlands, drought, desertification and internal strife China will soon lose its ability to feed its billion plus people. It is now focusing on the rest of the world for its needs. We should not become a pawn in their game.
Yours faithfully,
Nohar Singh
