Barbados captain Ryan Hinds grabbed three wickets in four balls late yesterday afternoon to restrict Guyana to 285 all out in the last over of the first day’s play of their fifth round Carib Beer Series match played at the Georgetown Cricket Club’s Bourda ground yesterday.
Guyana, at one stage 276-5 lost their remaining four wickets for only nine runs to be all out for 285 as the Barbadians fought back.
Guyana looked set to post a more sizeable total after winning the toss and batting but neither opener Sewnarine Chattergoon nor Derwin Christian, who both scored half centuries went on to record three figures.
Guyana’s innings effectively ended on 285 for nine as injured Guyana captain Ramnaresh Sarwan was unable to resume his innings after being struck on the glove by Fidel Edwards.
Chattergoon survived two chances in scoring 62 in 173 minutes, and, together with Assad Fudadin who scored 49, put on 97 for the third wicket before Fudadin was trapped leg-before by Collins at 144-3.
Chattergoon then chased a wide delivery from Edwards giving wicket-keeper Carlo Morris a simple catch 150-4.
Sarwan was then struck by Edwards and though he continued batting he did not return after tea retiring hurt on 8. At 150-4 the Guyana innings was at the cross-roads but Azeemul Haniff and Derwin Christian put on an 84-run partnership before Haniff (46) edged a delivery from Tino Best and wicket-keeper Carlo Morris took a brilliant catch diving to his left.
Christian looked comfortable against the quicker bowlers and came alive when Barbados took the new ball.
He took three fours in one over from Best but seemed affected by the decision to send young Verasammy Permaul in ahead of the more experienced Rayon Griffith just after Barbados had taken the new ball and tried to shield the youngster from the faster bowlers.
Hinds, however, changed tactics and came back on himself with the ball only six overs old and immediately trapped Christian leg-before-wicket as the batsman played back to an arm ball.
A run was scored off a no ball then Permaul and Gordon went in the same fashion in consecutive balls to end the innings which means that Hinds will start the second innings on a hat-trick.
The hostile Barbados pace attack of Fidel Edwards 3-60, Pedro Collins 1-33 and Tino Best 2-55 bowled well and could have dismissed Guyana earlier if four catches were not dropped.
Guyana left out Narsingh Deonarine, Esuan Crandon and Dion Ferrier while Barbados left out Corey Collymore, Kevin Stoute and Sulieman Benn.
