Stabroek News must continue the struggle

Dear Editor,

The pattern the media seem to be forming by using their voices to expose the injustices to them and society is highly commended. The most recent move is the decision of Stabroek News to put a protest message on the front page in every edition until the situation between them and the government concerning the GINA ads boycott changes.

This is indeed a new way to get the message across to those whom it is intended for. However, consistency is what it is all about. Of course, nothing really may result in such a move on this newspaper’s part, but I think standing up for what is right and being vocal is what counts. I can attest to such statements, because being vocal and standing up for what is right is what I am about.

The New Amsterdam Action Group (NAAG) and the New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council (M&TC) is still “sleeping and dreaming”, even after over three months of a message which airs at the end of every DTV- 8 newscast. Although the message has been on dozens of times on the air, the situation regarding the rubbish heaps on a particular New Amsterdam road remains pretty much the same. Is it negligence, ignorance, forgetfulness, or just plain disregard for the citizens of New Amsterdam? It is anyone’s guess. Late last year in a telephone interview the Town Clerk of the town mentioned to this letter writer that the punts would have been removed just after the holidays. The punts and derelict vehicles still decorate this road.

I’ve been watching keenly this situation between Stabroek News and GINA. Maybe a poll should really be conducted to put all matters to rest. In America there is the Gallup Organization, which is one of dozens of polling firms which publish polls on various matters. There is also the Nielsen Media Research organization which conducts weekly polling on American TV shows both in the daytime and primetime. This is how advertisers know where to spend their dollars. However, even though there are the top shows and top TV networks, the advertising dollars are spread out somewhat evenly. There is where fairness, balance and equality come in.

I admire this newspaper for making such a move; I urge them to be consistent, and continue to be the most balanced newspaper this country has ever known.

Yours faithfully,

Leon Jameson Suseran
