Dear Editor,
On a trip to Corentyne at the start of the year I observed a billboard that read: ‘GT&T: relax we’ve got you covered’. For the rest of the week I hardly had success in making calls to wish friends the best for 2007. Relax?
“I’m sorry your calling party is not available right now” was what I heard when I dialled my friend’s number who was standing right next to me.
“Network busy, retry?” was the famous slogan that characterised GT&T’s service for the beginning of the year.
“GT&T: getting better all the time.” They are supposed to get better, but at what rate? Other phone companies in the Caribbean were putting on the roof while GT&T was still laying the foundation. For GT&T, I hope the patriotic campaign works because the previous slogans would never hold in real competition.
Yours faithfully,
Kencil Banwarie
Editor’s note:
We sent a copy of this letter to GT&T for any comments they may wish to make and received the following response:
“Thanks for providing us with an opportunity to respond to the concerns raised by Kencil Banwarie in his letter re: concerns about our cellular network particularly on the Corentyne Coast.
While we acknowledge that there may be instances where occasional call dropping may occur in some sections of the Corentyne Coast, we will not be in a position to accurately clarify his claims as he has not provided enough information particularly about his location when he experienced the call failures.
Nevertheless GT&T, as has been highlighted in the media over the last two months, have been actively commissioning and boosting its cellular network in an effort to ensure seamless service throughout the coastal region from Charity to Moleson Creek. We are unable to confirm whether or not Mr Banwarie’s experience occurred in an area on the Corentyne Coast which has not had its service improved as yet.
Presently works are ongoing and are scheduled to begin on several sites on the Corentyne Coast at Fyrish, Leeds, Moleson Creek and Phillipi, which when completed will significantly improve signals along that corridor.
GT&T would like to point out to Kencil Banwarie that the billboard he observed with the slogan `GT&T: relax we’ve got you covered’, is no empty promise as work is being done every single day to ensure that our customer base is covered.
GT&T would also like to take this opportunity to urge Mr Banwarie and other customers to use the services of our 24×7 call centre 868-2355 to raise any issues surrounding our service since we welcome, appreciate and utilize all feedback from our valued customers.”
