Muslims from across the country gathered last Sunday at the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex for the 11th Annual Cultural Programme to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year.
A press release said the programme, which is the first activity on the calendar of events for Guyanese Muslims, was hosted by the Muslim Youth League (MYL) of Guyana in association with the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex, the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman and the Guyana Islamic Forum.
Attendees including Pro Chancellor at the University of Guyana Dr Prem Misir, were treated to a programme which included a presentation by Sheikh Majeed Ali, a representative of the Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) Anjuman Sunnatul Jamaat Association Inc; qaseedas, messages from religious and civic leaders as well as members of mosques countrywide; quranic exhortations and children’s items. Ali, in his remarks, said the beginning of a new year is of great significance. He said he is hopeful that the resolutions of all Muslims included forgiveness, unity and peace, all important themes for the nation. Ali also outlined areas where co-operation will be pursued between Guyanese and T&T Muslims through his organisation and the MYL.
