Dear Editor,
According to a report in the New York Post, Guyana’s president Bharrat Jagdeo and former NYC Police Commis-sioner, Bernard Kerik, met over lunch in Manhattan to discuss Kerik’s new appointment as advisor to the Guyana government on fighting crime. The paper published a photo of the two men sitting at a table in the restaurant.
The paper reported that the men had pasta and coffee and discussed counter-narcotics enforcement.
The meeting took place at Nello’s on the Upper East Side last Saturday. Nello, the paper reported, is a pricey Italian restaurant frequented by Kerik.
The paper said the two men discussed security issues facing Guyana, the small South American country, for which Kerik is now a presidential adviser.
Jagdeo’s chat with Kerik focused on Guyana’s national security “from a law-enforcement, military and counter-narcotics perspective,” the paper quoted Kerik as saying.
“The president is determined to clean up elements that contribute to crime in his country,” Kerik told the Post.
Most Guyanese I spoke with want President Jagdeo to take tough measures to get a handle on crime.
Yours faithfully,
Vishnu Bisram
