Dear Editor,
The prisoners who escaped from the Mazaruni prison stated that they carried out the act because of the conditions in the prison, particularly the food issue.
That may not be the whole truth, however, there needs to be another enquiry on the prisons. The view is widespread that prison officers, mainly some top officials, take away a lot that is purchased for the prisoners. Rice, meat etc. that are procured hardly get to the prisoners.
This is also true about other materials including cement and other building materials. The view is also widespread that such materials are either sold or taken for personal use by some officers.
That is why many who know that other prison officers take in cell phones and other items for prisoners, because they are compromised with other matters do nothing about it. They are afraid that if any steps are taken to curb this practice they too can be exposed.
An inquiry into the operation of the prisoners, if properly done, may bring out some of the misconduct of those who are supposed to be performing duties in that institution.
Yours faithfully
Walter Nead
