Every year Guyana observes World Women’s Day, a day set aside to highlight achievements, progress and problems women face in Guyana. But for women it’s just a speech giving day.
Different women’s organizations in Guyana on this day would highlight violence and other problems Guyanese women face. This includes rapes, violence and discrimination. After this day their organisations are no longer heard of. They become silent until the next women’s day.
What we want is a follow up on all the problems women face until they are brought under control. Men who rape women must be punished by law, no discrimination against women, job opportunities for women and pressure faced by women at the workplace from managers.
Every year we should make progress on problems faced by women. The most serious one is crimes by men against women. Men must honour their obligations to support their children financially and not leave the women to bear the strain of bringing up children without fathers.
