A man and his nephew appeared yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court accused of stealing a woman’s brand new laptop.
Junior Slowe, 23, of 27 Ogle Front Land, East Coast Demerara and Christopher Spencer, 28, of 173 Charlotte Street, Lacytown denied the larceny allegation and Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle remanded them both to prison.
It is alleged that on February 1 at Georgetown the duo stole a laptop valued $240,000 from Roberta David.
Spencer was represented by attorney-at-law Mohamed Zafar while Slowe was unrepresented.
Zafar informed the court that his client lives with his reputed wife who is three months pregnant and he works at Annicks Computer Services located on Robb Street.
According to the defence counsel Spencer had done computer repair works for the complainant over the last four years.
He said that his client discovered the laptop missing while it was in his care and made a report to the police.
“He believed that it was his nephew (Slowe) who stole the laptop. He received information that his nephew had sold it to someone in BV (Beterverwagting, ECD) for $75,000.”
Zafar added that Slowe turned up at his client’s home with a brand new cap and sneakers and the police were later informed about it.
He asked the court to consider granting his client his pre-trial liberty.
Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews, however, objected to bail being granted to the two defendants.
Matthews told the court the defendants will be charged later with offences of a similar nature.
Meanwhile, complainant David stated that Spencer had repaired a computer for her before. The woman said that he had only gone halfway in the repairs when she learnt that he had left the country. She said that due to this she sold the computer and later bought a laptop.
David explained that she and Spencer live in the same apartment building. She said that on the day in question, she told him that there was a problem with the wireless connection and he told her to bring it for him to fix. David said that she later went outside to talk to a friend and while doing so Slowe came outside and was looking at her. Spencer, she stated, later went out.
Repeated checks around the house yielded nothing and when Spencer came home she asked him for her computer.
“He didn’ t answer. He later told me that the laptop gone and he thinks that his nephew stole it because he left and went to the toilet and when he came back it was gone.”
The matter continues in Court Three on February 27.
