Western Tigers and Santos booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Annual Mayor’s Cup Football Tournament by defeating Uprising and Mocha Champs respectively on Wednesday evening at the GFC ground.
In the feature match of the double-header card, Western Tigers edged Uprising by a 3-2 margin in a penalty shoot out after the two teams were deadlocked 1-1 at the end of regulation and extra time, while Santos disposed of the reigning East Bank champions, Mocha Champs 2-0 in the opening encounter.
Donson Gomes netted for Tigers in the 42nd minute and Omalli Nassy produced Uprising’s equalizer in the 80th minute.
Earlier in the evening, Quincy Bournel and Gideon Payne netted Santos’s winning goals in the 37th and 75th respectively
Meanwhile, first round action in the competition culminates this evening with a double-header at the same venue. The feature match from 8pm brings together Georgetown Football League’s Premier League champions Alpha United and East Coast’s BV/Triumph , while the curtain raiser will see East Coast’s defending Premier League champions Victoria Kings tackling Georgetown’s Police from 6pm. Over $850,000 in cash incentives along with trophies and individual prizes are up for grabs, compliments of Jailing Motor Trading, Keishar’s and AH&L Kissoon.
