As the Inter-Secondary School Impromptu Speaking Competition sponsored by the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), Regent Street branch, continued on Thursday Marian Academy and Covent Garden Secondary prevailed over their respective opponents.
According to a press release from the bank, in the first contest, Marian Academy won over Cummings Lodge Secondary in an exciting match-up of good speakers on both sides. Marian Academy scored 596 points while Cummings Lodge scored 564 points.
The speakers for the winning school spoke on the benefits of physical fitness, Internet chat rooms and the benefits of a bank account while the speakers from Cummings Lodge spoke on gossip, laughter is the best medicine and every home needs a computer.
The release stated that Covent Garden won the second contest against St. Stanislaus College scoring 511 points compared to 471 scored by the latter.
The speakers from Covent Garden Secondary spoke on whether the CSME will keep skills within the region, corporal punishment in schools and banning exercise after school lessons.
The competition continues next Tuesday with Queen’s College coming up against Annandale Secondary and School of the Nations against Central High School.
Next Thursday, President’s College will match skills with North Georgetown Secondary and in the second game Mae’s Secondary will compete with St. John’s College, the release said.
