Former Minister of the Public Service, George Fung-on, passed away yesterday morning at his 212 New Garden Street, Queenstown home following a prolonged illness.
He was 85 years old.
Fung-on was hospitalized earlier this year and was subsequently discharged but remained unwell. He was being cared for by his wife and other relatives.
Fung-on spent most of his life in the civil service and had worked with the government in the colonial period and also in the Burnham and Jagan eras. He was appointed as Minister of the Public Service in 1992 when Dr. Cheddi Jagan was elected President.
In a brief comment to Stabroek News last evening, his wife Gloria Fung-on said he only ended his last contract with the government in December last year. Fung-on had been chairman of the Public Service Appellate Tribunal.
After 59 years of marriage she said she will miss her husband dearly.
