One afternoon, I stood on the corner of Regent and Camp Street observing a police officer, of Amerindian descent and in the oppressive heat, regulating the flow of traffic.
I could not believe my eyes when I saw a minibus driver, whose action can only be described as audacious and presumptuous, insolently defy the officer, and turn off Regent onto Camp Street amid the flowing traffic. Understandably, pandemonium resulted from this delinquent act, which eventually resulted in congestion at that junction.
The officer visibly became infuriated and tried to accost him by standing in front of the bus, and asking him to pull over to the corner, but he demonstrated his disdain and obduracy by continuing to drive slowly and shouting obscenities at the officer. Three of those policemen who are usually clad in black and perambulate Regent and Camp streets with their weapons came to this officer’s assistance, but to no avail, this driver just snaked his way out and eluded them all.
This typifies the decadent behaviour of some minibus drivers which is accounting for the lives of innumerable individuals on our road ways. Some draconian measures should be instituted to deal with them.
If this is not done, this behaviour will continue unabated, not only to the detriment of those commuters who access public transportation, but pedestrians as well.
