In a Stabroek News editorial of Thursday, January 18, captioned ‘The president and the party,’ it was said that the conflict between Mr Burnham’s constitution and Dr Jagan’s party was “well on the way.” Since that was written, the divergence of approach between government and senior members of the PPP on one issue at least – the matter of withdrawing advertisements from this newspaper – has gone into the public domain. As the leader observed, “there has always been a potential for institutional conflict between Forbes Burnham’s concept of the executive presidency
